Tennessee purple coneflower (Echinacea tennesseensis) is a rare perennial that looks like a cross between a daisy and a coneflower. It has traditional pink-purple coneflower coloring, but the flowers are full and flat like those of a daisy. Foliage is narrow and can be hard to tell apart from E. pallida.

Like all coneflowers, this one is easy to grow in rich, moist, well-drained soil in full sun. It must be grown in significant isolation (miles away!) from other coneflowers or it will not come true from seed.  It should also not be planted with other coneflower varieties as it is less robust and will not be able to hold its own. Still, this is a plant worth growing.

Happily, this plant is a conservation success story! It was added to the Federal List of Threatended and Endangered Plants in 1976. It was delisted in 2011 due to recovery. Here is the latest as of 2023:

Tennessee Coneflower (Echinacea tennesseensis) occurs in the southeastern United States. It is endemic to the Nashville Basin of Tennessee, occurring in limestone cedar glades and barrens only in eastern Davidson, northwestern Rutherford, and southwestern Wilson counties, Tennessee. It has been successfully reintroduced in its native habitat and most populations seem stable and possibly increasing, it occurs on ten Tennessee Designated State Natural Areas. The level of threat to Tennessee Coneflower has been reduced, through protection and ongoing management of populations. READ MORE.

Nursery pick up

We will email you to schedule a day and time to collect your plants when they are ready in spring. Generally, plants can be collected from the nursery Monday through Sunday from 10am-4pm in Spring, Summer, and Fall.

Plant Sizes

We most commonly use the following pot sizes for perennials:

  • 4-inch pot: 3.5" H x 3.5" W x 3.5" D
  • 2-quart pot: 6" H x 5.25" W x 5.25" D
  • 1-gallon pot: 6.87" H x 8" Dia (this is a true one gallon pot, not the smaller 'trade' one gallon pot used by many nurseries)

Check out our illustrated pot size guide here.

Representative trees & shrubs are photographed in their pots and posted on each plant page.

Sustainability

Sustainability is at the heart of what we do at The Old Dairy. We grow all of our plants outdoors without the use of chemicals, fertilizers, carbon fuels, or peat.

Many of our perennials are grown in the ground and dug upon order (this is especially true for larger sizes). This practice allows us to grow stronger, healthier plants using native soil, and ultimately reduces our impact on the environment.

Our open-pollinated seeds are collected from plants in our mother beds, which have never been treated with chemicals or sprays of any kind.
