Too scared to plant bamboo? Try Spodiopogon sibiricus. It has the same look, but won't take over the garden. Architectural stems take on brilliant purple tones as temperatures drop in fall. Airy inflorescences lend interest to the winter garden.

Easy to grow in consistently moist soil in full sun or part shade.

Southern gardeners: this Siberian native is best avoided as it does not like heat or humidity.
