Ditch stonecrop (Penthorum sedoides) is a native perennial that can be in floodplains, bottom forests, swamps, marshes, muddy shores, prairie swales, and ditches along roadsides across much of the eastern half of the United States.
Flowers resemble those of stonecrop, but this wildflower does not have the succulent leaves typical of plants in the Sedum genus. White flowers are not particularly showy in spring and summer, but the seed capsules do take on beautiful pink and red tones in fall (see images 2-4).
This plant is not commonly encountered in gardens or nurseries, but we think it makes a nice addition to the moist or boggy native plant garden. Fall color is wonderful.
