Maral root is a rare, imposing perennial that can be found growing naturally on rocky slopes and meadows in its native Russia, where the large, centaurea-like flowers light up the landscape. Easy to grow in full sun and average soil at high elevations. At low elevations, it should be kept cool and planted in slightly chalky, nutrient-poor, moist but well-drained soil.
This plant has a long history of medicinal use. Recent studies have shown that an extract made from the roots can greatly increase the work capacity of muscles, improve memory and learning, and normalize blood sugar levels quickly after exertion.
