shale barren buckwheat

Eriogonum allenii

Shale barren buckwheat is a US native occurring naturally only in the shale barrens of Virginia and West Virginia. We know it as a fantastic perennial for the rock garden. The broad grey-green leaves form a basal rosette that is completely smothered in deep gold flowers from July to frost. Honey bees go crazy for this plant!

Easy to grow in full sun in well-drained soil. Will tolerate a bit more moisture than other members of the genus.
